The "not so" Great Indian Cricket Fan

Raj (naam toh suna hi hoga) is an Accounting professional working at a MNC in tier-2 city in India. During his weekend he also does a part time job of writing accounts for smaller firms. Why do you work on weekends? someone asked him. He proudly says "Jab tak hath aur dimag chal rahe hai, kama lo jitna kama sakte ho" (#respect). Just to lighten the gravity of the conversation, someone asked his views about the horrific overseas performance of Indian Cricket team, he says "when cricketers are busy doing ad films in their free time for extra money, what more do you expect". Ahem, did you get it?

Let me also introduce you to Harmeet Singh, a graduate from LPU and working currently in, you guessed it right, Canada. Why so far away from your country someone asked him. He says "I earn 3 times of what I would have earned in India, makes sense to shift doesn't it?" Like all of us Harmeet also happens to be an ardent cricket fan and has his opinion about the raging club vs country debate (well, yea everyone is a critic) "Man,  the day you chose club over country for some extra money, you lose respect". Irony? Now are you getting it?

But there is one more person I had like you to meet, Arna-deep, a renowned TV news anchor (yea both of them in one, just imagine) who just 2 days prior to his 500th primetime slugfest, comes to terms with his ailing throat and decides to call it a day. The news channel is taken aback, but decides to part gracefully, However, just one month before this happened, Arna-deep had single handedly overpowered three cricket analysts on his show and adjudged an India captain, who called it a day because he thought he wasn't able to give it is 100%, a culprit. It was a disgrace he said to do something like  this without notice. Well, you expect u-turns with them.

Ladies and gentelmen, I've just introduced you to the Great Indian Cricket Fan, or are they?

Cricket in India is a religion. Its one thing to be passionate about it, another to be hypocritical and fiery. You swear your heart out when Dhawan drops it in slips (he does that), that is passion. But you pelt stones at a player's residence because he had a sad day at the field, that is fiery. Trolling a player stating that his girlfriend is a reason for his poor form (ft. Anushka ke chakkar mein barbaad hogaya Kohli and types) is well, Hypocrisy.

Why don't we understand that Cricket is a profession and one with very short shelf life (ft. Yuvraj Singh). So, if a player accepts to feature in an ad-film, he is not being arrogant of his status, he is being smart enough to use it as much as he can knowing pretty well that kal yeh status ho na ho. Why this behavior? 2 reasons I could think of. Cricket for the larger part of the last 3 decades was the only sport in which India excelled and the second and the more important reason, during this time the electronic and social media idolized and demonized them in equal proportions for their wins and losses.

Can this attitude change? Especially when it is very common in modern day professional sports for a player to go where money lies (ft. Football). It shall probably change in due course as India starts excelling in other sports.

However, in order to get a second opinion I asked my friend on what he thinks will change this attitude, to which he replied "Chod na yaar, Cricket mein sab waise hi fixed hai". Period.

Note: All characters are hypothetical but bear excpetionally high resemblance to people around me. :)
